The Berz are a seafaring race of birdlike humanoids. They are a selfish lot, with no real morals. They are known for their proficiency at fishing and hunting on the river, as well as deceit and lawlessness.
Personality: Berza as a race enjoy three things: Wealth, power, and water. They will do anything they can get away with to procure the former two for themselves, while the latter is more of a way of life for them. They have been described as greedy and self-serving by many. Most are paranoid, schizophrenic, or in some other way not entirely sane.
Physical Description: Berza stand somewhere between 4 ½ and 6 ft tall and weigh between 85 and 150 lbs. The colors of different Berza are myriad. They posses beaks, feathered bodies, talonlike feet, and heavily feathered arms that resemble wings. However, Berza are incapable of flight. Berza reach maturity at age 13 and rarely live longer than 75 years.
Relations: Because Berza are known for scamming and thieving, free-roaming Berza in cities are looked upon with at least a healthy amount of suspicion. However, Berza have also gained a reputation for well supplied, if shrewd, traders. Berza themselves see every new encounter as an opportunity. Whether that opportunity is honourable or not depends on the Berz in question. Despite all drawbacks, even the Berza have found their place in society.
Alignment: They lean neither towards good or evil, but prefer to act on their own self-interest. However, evil Berza are more common than good Berza. Their love of freedom and hatred of society’s restraints leads most Berza to the side of chaos.
Lands: Berza have few stationary settlements, and those that exist are exclusively either near the water or near a lucrative business venture – preferably both. They enjoy a life on the river, using large rafts and canoes to navigate. They hunt and fish on the river to feed themselves. Though quite a few Berza have taken to trading as an occupation, many take to piracy as both an adventure and as a lucrative business.
Language: Berzan is commonly used when Berza are in the company of their own kind. However, they refrain from using their native tongue when speaking to outsiders out of a strange sense of courtesy. Traders often learn Berzan, which is almost required to be successful in that field. Berzan has its own alphabet consisting of thousands of characters.
Names: A Berz is given a name by its parents at birth. However, upon reaching maturity they usually choose a new one. This new name’s meaning usually has some significance to the individual.

Common Female Names: Noburu, Susumu, Haruki, Kazuki, Daiki
Adventurers: Because of their intrinsic love of freedom, the Berza find the adventuring life comes naturally to them. In fact, most Berza take to adventuring at one time or another. Not all are successful, but almost all enjoy it.
Berz Racial Traits
Ability Scores: +2 Dexterity, -2 Wisdom, Berza are lithe and quick, but almost all of them are a bit mad.
Medium: Berza receive no bonuses or penalties due to their size.
Speed: A Berza has a base speed of 30 ft.
Low-light vision: Berza can see twice as far as normal in conditions of limited light due to superior eyesight.
Saves: +2 to will saves against magical effects.
Skills: +2 to move silently and bluff checks and +4 to jump checks. Furthermore, a Berz’s jumping distance and height are not limited by its height.
Leap of the Marlin: Once per day, a Berz may double any d20 roll made to succeed at a Jump check. The intention to use this ability must be announced before the result is rolled.

Favoured Class: Rogue, a multiclass Berz’s Rogue class does not count when determining whether it suffers an XP penalty for multiclassing.
