Hytan (singular Hytan) are the dominant race in the realm. By far the most populous and influential of the races, they have earned the right to be such. The Hytan are known for their innovative capabilities, religious zeal, pride, and their love of good food and wine. Though they are generally a peaceful people, religious matters can stir many of them into a rage.
Personality: Hytan are a calm, reasonable, and objective people – unless religious matters are being discussed, and then they have strong opinions that they voice loudly and without much courtesy. They find relaxing a pleasurable pastime, and see little merit in hard work. Most greatly enjoy luxuries, and find themselves feeling inferior without such extravagancies. They are very covetous, but will keep a calm disposition in such matters as to not damage their pride. They are a very united race, and even two Hytan who have never met before have some type of brotherly connection. In Hytan society, there are also families or Houses that each Hytan belongs to. However, they have no real connection to these, as Houses are seen as class hierarchies. Thus, those of more influential Houses cling to their House, while those of lower castes find Houses unnecessary.
Physical Description: Hytan stand 3 to 4 ft tall, and are unusually heavy for their height, sometimes up to 160 lbs. Some have described Hytan as “walking cacti”, which is correct in a sense. They have tough, green, plantlike skin that greatly resembles that of a cactus, and their body shape is similar as well. However, a Hytan also has long, thin arms, hands that seem too large for its body, and short, stubby legs. They also have a few spines on their arms, head, and chest. Males have a single large spine protruding from the top of its head, while females have a large vine with a lotus flower at its tip in place of this. Females are also substantially thinner. Hytan have relatively short life spans, reaching maturity at age 10 and rarely living more than 60 years.
Relations: Hytan find most other races tolerable, even those like the Dor’angs who vastly differ from their ideas. They treat individuals with courtesy and allow them to prove themselves before judging them. Other races treat them fairly and with respect, except for the Dor’angs who have little tolerance for them. Also, because of their religious fanaticism, the Hytan Orthodox Church is constantly at odds with the Church of Horus.
Alignment: Individual Hytan have no particular sway towards any alignment. However, because of their piousness, they will often emulate the lawful neutral alignment of the Hytan Orthodox Church.
Lands: Hytan lands are dotted with large population centers. These cities have a wide variety of other races integrated into society as well. All travelers and immigrants are welcome in any Hytan city so long as they stay out of trouble.
Religion: The Hytan are extremely devout and religiously zealous. The slightest negative comment about a Hytan’s religious beliefs can send it flying into a rage. Hytan worship the entire pantheon, and usually choose one or two to focus on specifically based on who the local temples are devoted to. While the Hytan Orthodox Church promotes the worship of Ra primarily, other popular Gods include Thoth, the ibis-God of knowledge, and Ptah, the God of invention and craftsmen.
Language: In addition to Common, Hytan generally learn High Common. They have developed a mentality that civilized races must have a civilized tongue. They were the first to coin the term “High Common”. However, in Hytan temples, Netherspeak runes are used to write inscriptions and decorate temple walls.
Names: A Hytan’s parents will bestow a name upon their child at birth, subject to approval by the church, that the child is expected to carry throughout its life. A Hytan will also commonly carry its family name.
Adventurers: Because the Hytan are such a relaxed people, it is unusual for them to go on adventures. Few opportunities can spur them to the adventuring life, possibly the only major reason is wealth, which they find easier to procure in other ways. However, Hytan adventurers are not unknown – religion in particular is a good motivator.
